MARATHON makes tangible the human ability to sustain an action, physically and/or mentally, for an undefined, extended period—to endure, to persist, to keep going. On stage, three performers move: a drummer, a marathon swimmer, and a high-performance athlete. What drives these bodies? What motivates them? Where are their limits? How did they ever begin, and how long will they continue?
In a hardcore physical performance, driven by a challenging marathon-like drum composition, K&A constructs a bridge between elite sport and performance art.
“Since I was five, I’ve spent countless hours training in percussion, repeating drum patterns and losing awareness of everything around me. Those moments of extreme focus that require endurance are so unique and valuable. They shape who you are.”
“When you swim long distances, everything gradually disappears. You see less, hear less. Only oxygen and water remain. But you feel more. In a kind of trance, your body keeps going. We are made of 70% water. Long-distance swimming is when 70% of our body finally comes home.”
K&A sees the endurance and perseverance associated with marathon sessions as the connecting force between sport and performance. Since the beginning of their collaboration as a duo, the concentration required for this has been a core element of their practice. With this performance, they take the audience into an immersive experience that makes the crucial role of the marathon in society tangible. K&A pushes the audience to the limits of their own endurance.
