DESCRIPTION:De la fin du 19e siècle aux années 1940\, une révolution administrative bouleverse le monde du travail. Dans la continuité des réformes tayloriennes\, la rationalisation du travail de bureau se développe avec l’essor de nouveaux modes d’organisation et la création de nouveaux outils techniques. La machine à écrire constitue alors l’objet iconique de cette nouvelle ère\, tandis que la dactylographe en sera la figure incontournable. Ainsi\, d’innombrables bataillons administratifs\, majoritairement composés de femmes\, vont rejoindre les employés de bureau jusqu’alors essentiellement masculins\, pour y occuper les postes subalternes – et nettement moins bien rémunérés – de dactylographes et de sténographes.\nC’est dans ce contexte que la jeune Alice Rivaz intègre en 1925 le récent Bureau International du Travail\, où elle travaillera jusqu’à sa retraite comme sténodactylographe puis documentaliste. Au sein d’une société encore très conservatrice\, cette institution moderne et cosmopolite lui fournit un poste d’observation unique sur les mutations organisationnelles et sociales de son époque. Alors que Rivaz et ses consœurs se trouvent vouées « aux tâches abstraites qu’exige l’administration des choses »\, portant sur leurs épaules le poids d’une modernité placée sous le signe de l’accélération et du rendement\, la romancière se servira bientôt du même outil – la machine à écrire – pour affirmer sa propre voix et témoigner de son expérience. Dans ses romans Comme le sable (1946) et Le Creux de la Vague (1967)\, elle décrit avec une finesse remarquable ces nouveaux environnements de travail et de vie. Elle y questionne aussi bien la crise de sens produite par cette révolution administrative\, que la reconfiguration des rapports de domination genrés qui l’accompagnent. \nPrès d’un siècle plus tard\, ces questions restent largement d’actualité. Elles prennent toutefois des formes nouvelles\, alors que le travail subalterne qui sous-tend l’administration des choses se trouve parfois délégué aux machines\, parfois délocalisé\, souvent invisibilisé. Pour remonter aux sources de cette histoire et en aborder les enjeux\, l’historienne et sociologue Delphine Gardey\, spécialiste (entre autre!) de l’histoire des employées de bureaux sera en conversation avec Valérie Cossy\, professeure en études genre et autrice de l’ouvrage « Alice Rivaz. Devenir romancière » (éd. Suzanne Huret\, 2015). La Compagnie K&A (Karla Isidorou et Alexandra Bellon) proposera une performance musicale participative avec machines à écrire\, dont la fameuse Olivetti Lettera 32 qu’Alice Rivaz avait elle-même possédée. L’artiste Ramaya Tegegne questionnera les enjeux de la charge administrative chez les artistes – entre asservissement et émancipation. Enfin\, nous profiterons de cet événement pour inaugurer notre première édition d’Insert\, conçue par l’écrivain Daniel de Roulet en complément de son livre « La Suisse de travers » (éd. Héros-Limite\, 2020).
